Where Jungle Meets Lagoon

Named for the melipona, the sacred stingless bee of the Maya, Melipona Bacalar is a lagoon hotel set across four off-grid villas — cradled between the still waters of the lagoon and the breathing green of the jungle. Here, we move at the rhythm of the water.

How do I get there, and will my travel be arranged?
We'll take care of it. The nearest airports are Chetumal (about an hour away) and Tulum, and there are bus and train connections into the region. Our concierge can arrange airport pickup and drop-off for a manageable fee, and our shuttle to and from Bacalar town and the local bus and train stops is complimentary. Tell us your arrival details and we'll make sure the journey is handled end to end.
When does Melipona Bacalar open?
2028.
How many villas and suites are there?
Four villas — Favosa, Bicolor, Beecheii, and Quadri — with twenty-three suites in total.
Can I book a whole villa, or just a suite?
Both. Reserve a single lagoon-front suite and enjoy the full rhythm of the hotel, or take an entire villa privately for a family gathering, a celebration, or a group escape.
What does "off-grid" mean here?
The hotel is built to run sustainably and lightly on the land, with each villa made from locally sourced materials — barefoot luxury that treads gently on the lagoon.
Is the hotel full-service?
Yes. Daily room turndown, a complimentary shuttle to and from town, a front-desk concierge to help plan your days, and full-time on-site security — so everything is handled and the time is yours.
Is there dining on-site?
Yes — a community bar & grill in Beecheii serves light local small plates, sophisticated cocktails, and wine, with drink service out to the palapas. A private chef is also available on request.
What wellness offerings are available?
Boutique, eco-minded wellness: massage and sound healing on request, plus visiting guides for seasonal retreats. It's intentionally not a full spa.
What's the story behind the bee — and are there bees everywhere?
The melipona is the native stingless bee of the Yucatán, kept by the Maya for thousands of years for its rare, prized honey. It gives us our name, our honey, and our spirit — gentle, local, and completely harmless. There's nothing to fear: these bees don't sting.
